The Guns of Fort Petticoat *** (1957, Audie Murphy, Kathryn Grant, Hope Emerson) – Classic Movie Review 9712

Director George Marshall’s 1957 Western film The Guns of Fort Petticoat stars Audie Murphy as a Texan Union Army deserter, Lieutenant Frank Hewitt, who trains a band of homesteader wives at an old fort to defend themselves against an Indian attack by a Comanche tribe on the warpath.

The husbands are away at the Civil War fighting in the Confederate Army, and Murphy has deserted because his cavalry colonel is stirring up the Indian unrest.

The Guns of Fort Petticoat is a good little Western that holds the attention and is worth seeking out, with its stalwart performances, attractive Technicolor photography and decent dialogue, though with a slightly better script it could have been special.

Kathryn Crosby, Hope Emerson, Jeff Donnell, Isobel Elsom, Jeanette Nolan, Sean McClory, Ernestine Wade, Peggy Maley, Patricia Livingston [Patricia Tiernan], Kim Charney, Ray Teal, Nestor Paiva, James Griffith, Hugh Sanders, Madge Meredith and Charles Horvath.
