The Disembodied ** (1957, Paul Burke, Allison Hayes, John Wengraf) – Classic Movie Review 4920

Sultry Allison Hayes stars as Tonda Metz, the wife of tropical doctor Dr Carl Metz (John Wengraf), who sneaks off for voodoo dancing in her fetching sarong and matching tooth necklace and works up to casting a spell to bump him off. Paul Burke also stars as photographer Tom Maxwell, who goes on an expedition to the jungle and falls foul of the local voodoo cult.

Director Walter Grauman’s daft and trashy 1957 horror adventure is full of silly and predictable jungle high-jinks. The movie has a certain mad low-budget charm, but not a lot, and the laughs outweigh any thrills or scares by about a thousand to one.

‘FEMALE WITCH DOCTOR…FIENDISH TIGRESS OF THE JUNGLE!’ It was strictly just a support filler for Fifties double bills but, as such, now it is a little bit of campy fun.

Eugenia Paul co-stars as Mara, wife of Suba (Norman Frederic [aka Dean Fredericks]). She died on 24 May 2010.

Also in the cast are Robert Christopher, Norman Fredric, Joel Marston and Paul Thompson.

It runs just 66 minutes, is released by Allied Artists, is written by Jack Townley, is shot in black and white by Harry Neumann, is produced by Bert Schwab and is scored by Martin Skiles. Allied Artists released it on the lower half of a double bill with From Hell It Came (1957).

Allison Hayes went on to immortality with Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958).
