The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer [Bachelor Knight] **** (1947, Cary Grant, Myrna Loy, Shirley Temple, Ray Collins, Rudy Vallee, Harry Davenport) – Classic Movie Review 3084

Director Irving Reis’s and writer Sidney Sheldon ‘s witty 1947 screwball comedy, known as Bachelor Knight in the UK, stars Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and Shirley Temple.

Loy plays a judge, Judge Margaret Turner, who sentences a smooth socialite bachelor (Grant), a playboy artist called Dick Nugent, to take out her bobby-soxer teenage sister Susan (Temple), so that the 17-year-old high school girl will get over her crush on the middle-aged charmer. So Nugent, threatened with jail, agrees to date Susan until the crush abates.

Sparkling comedy playing from the stars turns Sheldon’s Oscar-winning screenplay into an endearing entertainment. Grant is particularly appealing as he jitterbugs and runs an obstacle race. It also stars Ray Collins as Dr Matthew Beemish, Rudy Vallee as District Attorney Tommy Chamberlain, and Harry Davenport as Judge Thaddeus Turner

Also in the cast are Veda Ann Borg, Johnny Sands, Don Beddoe, Lillian Randolph, Dan Tobin, Ransom Sherman, William Bakewell, Irving Bacon, Ian Bernard, Carol Hughes, William Hall and Gregory Gay.

Grant and Loy memorably re-teamed the following year for Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948).
