Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot (1992, Sylvester Stallone, Estelle Getty, JoBeth Williams, Roger Rees) – Classic Movie Review 10,619

Director Roger Spottiswoode’s triple Razzie Award-winning 1992 action comedy Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot is a total failure from Sylvester Stallone in another attempt to perfect his comedy technique (after the 1991 Oscar).

He plays Joe Bomowski, a tough LA street cop fighting the villains (led by a posturing Roger Rees as Parnell), romancing the boss, Gwen Harper (JoBeth Williams), and fighting off the over-attentive mom of the title, Tutti (Estelle Getty, aka Sophia Petrillo of The Golden Girls), who has come to stay with him and witnesses a murder.

The premise and cast are OK, but the script is one for the waste-bin. The bossy mom jokes are hammered into the ground in about 10 minutes, while the police case action story is perfunctory and uninteresting.

‘Pretty horrific,’ Stallone recalled in 1994.

Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot won three Razzie Awards in 1993: Worst Actor (Sylvester Stallone), Worst Supporting Actress (Estelle Getty) and Worst Screenplay (Blake Snyder, William Osborne and William Davies).

Also in the cast are Martin Ferrero, Gailard Sartain, Dennis Burkley, John Wesley, Al Fann, Ella Joyce, J Kenneth Campbell, Nicholas Sadler, Ving Rhames, and Jana Arnold.

Ottawa-born Roger Spottiswoode is the director of Under Fire (1988), Deadly Pursuit (1988), Turner & Hooch (1988), Air America (1990), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and The 6th Day (2000).
