Predestination **** (2014, Ethan Hawke, Sarah Snook, Noah Taylor) – Movie Review

1

Ethan Hawke stars as a time-travelling ‘temporal agent’ masquerading as a barman, who, as his final assignment, must pursue the one criminal who has eluded him throughout time. He is sent back in time to 1975 New York to tackle a terrorist called The Fizzle Bomber.

Australian newcomer Sarah Snook plays his inter-sex customer at the bar, The Unmarried Mother, who was born Jane and is now John, and was dumped from the Space Corps when the government found (s)he was inter-sex. And Noah Taylor plays the enigmatic Mr Robertson.

The Spierig Brothers’ Australian-made time-travel thriller movie is very clever, engrossing and involving – and it’s a real good-looker too. Based on the short story All You Zombies, it’s very Robert Heinlein, and it captures his spirit exactly. Hawke, Snook and Taylor suit the intense, engaging material and the characters they play perfectly.
