Mustang Country ** (1976, Joel McCrea, Robert Fuller, Patrick Wayne, Nika Mina) – Classic Movie Review 11,295

Writer/ producer/ director John C Champion’s 1976 film Mustang Country stars Joel McCrea in his final film at the age of 70 as a one-time rancher and rodeo star who emerges from his retirement to capture a wild horse, and befriends the runaway young Indian boy (Nika Mina) who wants the mustang.

Mustang Country is a nicely shot, if too talky family Western drama, happily lacking in pretensions, but unfortunately lacking in ambitions also.

Mustang Country is a bit dull and hardly memorable, but it is still pleasant for tolerant young people, while old trooper McCrea is impressive enough to hold the attention of adult viewers, with Robert Fuller and Patrick Wayne welcome in support.

After a five-year gap since The Young Rounders (1971), McCrea came out of retirement to make the movie and then retired from acting for good. He had basically retired after Ride the High Country (1962), but returned in 1970 for Cry Blood, Apache.
