Happy Gilmore * (1996, Adam Sandler, Carl Weathers, Richard Kiel, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen) – Classic Movie Review 6325

Director Dennis Dugan’s popular but extremely annoying 1996 so-called ‘comedy’ finds Adam Sandler doing his goofy act as Happy Gilmore, a hopeless ice-hockey player who turns to golf with expected farcical results.

The movie is silly and often desperate. Sandler hasn’t hit his stride in this one.

Yet it was one of the most successful movies of 1996, with a budget of just $12 million, it grossed more than $40 million at the box office and $35 million on home video.

Ben Stiller has a cameo as a nursing home orderly.

Also in the cast are Carl Weathers, Richard Kiel, Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Alan Covert, Bob Barker, Frances Bay, Joe Flaherty, Kevin Nealon, Dennis Dugan and Ken Camroux.

Running 92 minutes, this Universal release is written by Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy (the writers of 1995’s Billy Madison), is shot by Arthur Albert, produced by Robert Simonds and scored by Mark Mothersbaugh.

Christopher McDonald, who made his character Shooter McGavin such a popular heel in Happy Gilmore, was arrested for driving under the influence on 30 October 2017, and told the cops he was in Happy Gilmore. But he was booked at the Big Bear Jail, put in the drunk tank, sobered up and released without bail.

On 5 November 2017, Adam Sandler received the Hollywood Comedy Award for his performance in The Meyerowitz Stories, directed by Noah Baumbach, and also starring Ben Stiller and Dustin Hoffman.
