Friday the 13th, Part V: A New Beginning * (1985, Melanie Kinnaman, John Shepherd, Anthony Barrile) – Classic Movie Review 8277

Hopes that the series would finally end after 1984’s Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter are cruelly dashed with co-writer/ director Danny Steinmann’s 1985 horror mystery thriller Friday the 13th, Part V: A New Beginning. There is nothing new here, though, just more of the same old stalk and slash, though they just about manage to keep the repetitive saga going, with at least some ingenuity in the story and screenplay by Martin Kitrosser and David Cohen.

This time Tommy Jarvis (Corey Feldman plays Tommy at 12), the boy who despatched the hockey-masked serial killer Jason Voorhees with a machete in The Fin al Chapter and has grown up in various mental hospitals, is released to live in a secluded halfway house and apparently goes on the rampage after innocent teenagers. He is now played by John Shepherd, the film’s main actor. Tom Morga plays Jason Voorhees.

Also in the cast are John Shepherd, Melanie Kinnaman, Shavar Ross, Richard Young, Carol Lacatell, Vernon Washington, Anthony Barrile, Dominick Brascia, Todd Bryant, Curtis Conaway, Juliette Cummins, Bob DeSimone, John Robert Dixon, Jere Fields, Richard Lineback, Tiffany Helm, Ric Mancini and Corey Parker.

The budget was tiny, at $2,200,000, and the box office good, grossing $21,930,418 in the US. Next up is Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, directed by Tom McLoughlin (1986).
