Enough * (2002, Jennifer Lopez, Billy Campbell, Tessa Allen, Juliette Lewis, Dan Futterman, Noah Wyle, Fred Ward) – Classic Movie Review 5885

Enough already! Jennifer Lopez follows Mariah Carey (Glitter) and Britney Spears (Crossroads) to the video dump bin with director Michael Apted’s tatty and inept 2002 revenge thriller. If, as the poster says, everyone has a limit, this took me to mine and beyond, testing my patience limits big time.

Lopez stars as a pretty waitress who gets tricked into marrying a nasty piece of work (Billy Campbell, drawing the short straw) as his trophy wife, then gives her the good life but a bad existence, when he goes womanising and beats her up.

She says enough and flees from him with their young daughter Gracie (Tessa Allen). But he wants them back, and he will stop at nothing to get them. When Lopez finds she cannot hide from this rotten piece of work, she has to train up and learn defence arts to survive and fight back.

With threadbare action scenes and predictable plotting, there are no surprises for anyone who has seen the no-better abusive marriage film Sleeping with the Enemy, and Lopez’s acting range is sorely tested, in a J-Lo-charm, one-note performance. She just cannot make this hugely exploitative, offensive and unbelievable thriller work.

Just when you want to have a good laugh at its expense, a semblance of professionalism keeps cropping in and spoiling the fun. After an hour, I cried ‘enough’, and then it went on another hour (it is 115 minutes).

The writer to blame is Nicholas Kazan.

Also in the cast are Juliette Lewis, Dan Futterman, Noah Wyle, Fred Ward, Janet Carroll, Bill Cobbs, Christopher Maher, Bruce A Young, Bruce French and Ruben Madera.
