Can’t Hardly Wait ***½ (1998, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ethan Embry, Charlie Korsmo, Seth Green, Peter Facinelli) – Classic Movie Review 1966

Writer-directors Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan’s multi-character 1998 teenage comedy romance Can’t Hardly Wait focuses on American high-schoolers on the last night before graduation who naturally can’t hardly wait for their lives to begin for real.

In particular, Preston Myers (Ethan Embry) just can’t hardly wait for the cute Amanda Beckett (Jennifer Love Hewitt), a girl he has loved for years and who has just broken up with her boyfriend, while 500 high school seniors celebrate by drinking, having sex and partying.

Can’t Hardly Wait is a fantastically funny Nineties film that is credited with bringing back the John Hughes-style Eighties teen comedy into vogue again for a new generation of young adults, starting a long cycle of hit movies like She’s All That, American Pie, Clueless, Road Trip, and 10 Things I Hate About You. Embry and Seth Green are both especially hilarious.

Charlie Korsmo, Lauren Ambrose, Peter Facinelli, Michelle Brookhurst, Alexander Martin, Melissa Joan Hart, Freddy Rodríguez, Jerry O’Connell, Donald Faison, Breckin Meyer, Jenna Elfman and Sean Patrick Thomas also co-star.
