Hart’s War *** (2002, Bruce Willis, Colin Farrell, Terrence Howard) – Classic Movie Review 6362

Colin Farrell plays Lieutenant Thomas Hart, an American law-student-turned GI fighting in World War Two, who is captured by enemy soldiers.

He is taken to a German PoW camp, where Bruce Willis plays the ranking American officer, Colonel William McNamara, whom he ends up battling along with racism when he takes up the case of a young African American man, Lieutenant Lincoln Scott (Terrence Howard), falsely accused of murder.

Though not without its fair share of clichés, caricatured characters and longueurs, director Gregory Hoblit’s 2002 movie is still a decently acted, intelligent, sterling legal drama, effectively tackling the subject of racism.

Also in the cast are Cole Hauser, Marcel Iures, Linus Roache, Vicellous Shannon, Maury Sterling and Sam Jaeger.

Billy Ray’s screenplay is based on the novel by John Katzenbach.

Gregory Hoblit is also the director of Primal Fear (1996), Fallen (1998), Frequency (2000), Fracture (2007) and Untraceable (2008).
