1% ** (2017, Eddie Baroo, Ryan Corr, Aaron Fa’aoso, Matt Nable, Simone Kessell, Abbey Lee) – Movie Review

Director Stephen McCallum’s punchy low-budget 2017 Australian crime thriller plays like a Sixties/ Seventies biker movie. It has a certain basic raw energy and revving dynamism on its side, but obviously it avoids anything like good taste or any subtlety. It is as hard and rough as rusty nails.

1% is what they used to call an exploitation movie, and as such is fairly entertaining, characterful, and atmospheric. Apparently made with real bikers, it is not a good advert for Australia or Australians.

Abbey Lee in 1% (2017).

The heir to the throne of a outlaw motorcycle club gang has been running its while its president (Matt Nable) is in jail. But, when the president gets out, he is forced to betray him to try to save his beloved dim-witted brother’s life. It turns out the president likes boys rather than girls, a taste developed in jail, somewhat upsetting his long-term girlfriend when he spends his first night out of prison with a newly initiated gang member (Ryan Corr) instead of her.

In this mainly man’s man world, there are a couple of good roles for women – Simone Kessell as the tough Hayley, the president’s girlfriend, and Abbey Lee as an even tougher biker chick propelling her man, Lady Macbeth-style, as leader of the gang.

Eddie Baroo, who plays Webby.

Eddie Baroo, who plays Webby, fronted the band Stodgewood and formed Buggertoe records.
